The great church music of J.S.Bach, Handel´s operas and Vivaldi´s concerti are all very familiar to many of us. We know of Marie-Antoinette and the French Revolution, of Rousseau and Voltaire, Gulliver´s Travels and war and colonisation in the turbulent 18th century.
But behind all these events there was the reality of everyday life to be lived by all levels of society - a life spiced with music and dance - but a life for which there was little space in the telling of the bigger historical picture.
The music and song was of the people, inspired by the great masters of music but drawing inspiration from local traditions and the pastoral impressions of wider travel - world music in 18th century clothing.
It is from this treasure trove that HD and PH have woven a collage of velvety sounds and masterly tunes.
The music is played on Celtic harp and low whistle and pipe and tabor. Instruments which are both the preferred favourites of the duo and also very close to the sounds heard in the 18th century.
The concert offers newly discovered
harp sonatas by the virtuoso harpist/composer Johann Andreas Kirchhoff
(German by birth and Danish in later life), suites from E.Reventlow´s
music book of 1799 from Lolland in southern Denmark, English Country Dances,
a Danish sonata for flute and figured bass and Danish dance tunes with
a French flavour.
